a natural approach to thrush/yeast

Yeast and Thrush.

Two of the most feared words for breastfeeding mamas. It ranks right up there with mastitis and colic.

However, there are some safe and all natural rememdies to help eliminate and prevent recurrent yeast infections.

First, I am not a medical professional and can not diagnose or treat any medical condition. With that said, these recommendations were given to me by my holistic pediatrician and they have worked wonders for us.

Perhaps the most important thing to know is that sugar feeds yeast. Yeast LOVES sugar. It really really loves sugar. Therefore, it’s very important to avoid sugar while treating yeast. I know, I know. But it’s so important! Eliminate all processed foods and processed sugar to starve the yeast at the source. Limit natural sweeteners (like fruit and maple syrup).

Increase your probiotics and also your baby’s. I use this probiotic powder for Hudson. I mix it into his puréed food or his coconut milk yogurt. You can also mix it with a little breast milk and spoon feed it. I did this when he was a newborn. Probiotics help balance the bacteria in the body and help to eliminate yeast.

Epsom salt baths are also recommended. Especially if the yeast is in their diaper area like ours was. We added a drop of tea tree oil into our bath as well. Epsom salt baths draw out toxins and boost magnesium levels. The added tea tree helps eliminate the yeast. See this study and this study.

In addition to adding tea tree oil into the bath, we made a balm combining the motherlove diaper ointment with a couple drops of tea tree oil. This was applied at every single diaper change. I also applied this to my nipples after every feeding. I would wipe off any residual ointment prior to the next feeding to make sure he didn’t ingest any of it.

For me, I took a capsule with two drops of oregano oil in it every day. I also added dried oregano to all my dishes and soups. Oregano is a hot oil and I would not recommend using it topically on infected nipples. I also would not use it on a child. However, I was able to take it internally. For more info on oregano oil and yeast go here. It’s also important to note that I only recommend taking oils internally if you are 100% sure your oils are pure. Most oils are not for internal consumption. Young Living is the only brand I trust to take internally and their oregano vitality oil is labeled as a dietary supplement and considered GRAS.

Wash all of your bras in hot water with bleach. Normally, I resist using bleach and instead opt for natural cleaners. We have switched all of our products over to non toxic alternatives. However, in this case, I highly recommend using a little bleach to kill off the active yeast and the spores.

Wear disposable nursing pads. We normally are an all cloth family. I use cloth nursing pads and cloth feminine pads. We also cloth diaper. But when you have yeast, switching to disposable pads goes a long way in preventing reinfection. Once you have been yeast free for two whole weeks (and you’ve bleached your cloth pads), you can resume using your cloth products. This also rings true for cloth diapers. Temporarily switch to disposables until the baby has been clear for two whole weeks. Wash your diapers normally and then wash again with 1/2 cup of bleach. Dry in the sun and then they will be good to go once your baby is ready for them.

Colloidal silver can be added to a cotton round and applied to nipples and diaper area daily.

Lastly, seek medical help if it is not clearing up after two weeks. Yeast can take up to two weeks to go away once you’ve started treatment but if it is not responding then see your doctor. Sometimes  antifungal ointment is needed.

We battled recurrent thrush and yeast for 4 months (including taking diflucan and nystatin) until following these guidelines. We’ve now been yeast free for 6 months!

the best baby cookies!!

When it comes to feeding our littlest ones, nutrient density is key. We also want to make sure it’s easily digestible and won’t cause inflammation to their tiny gi systems.

We also want things that are easy to make, easy to eat and hold, and we would like it to taste good.

These little cookies are the result!

Super moist, packed with nutrients, protein/collagen, and healthy fats, these cookies are perfect for growing bodies. They are also naturally sweetened, gluten and grain free, dairy free, nut free, legumes free, and soy free. They are also Paleo!

Hudson ate three and continued to sign “more”. I’ll take that as a compliment :).

Baby cookies (makes 10-12 small cookies)

*appropriate for those 8+ months old

1/2 cup coconut flour

1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce

1 Tbsp coconut milk or water

1 Tbsp honey (use maple syrup if baby is under 1)

2 tsp gelatin

2 tsp olive oil

2 egg yolks

cinnamon to taste

pinch of sea salt

Mix all ingredients well by hand. Form small balls and place on cookie sheet. Press gently to flatten. Bake at 350 until the bottoms of the cookies are a medium brown color. Set out to cool and then serve!

natural flu prevention and remedies

Well, it’s that time of year again! The dreaded cold and flu season. So….Let’s chat flu!

Let’s talk prevention and remedies. Let’s start with remedies.

First off, say no to tamiflu!! Tamiflu can cause serious mental/mood changes along with respiratory problems, nausea, nose bleeds, headache, dizziness and more. Want more info?  Ask your pharmacist for the medication insert.

But if we can’t use tamiflu, what can be done? Don’t fear! There is something even better than tamiflu (more effective) and it doesn’t have any side effects AND it’s safe for children!

1. Elderberry.

In a medical study elderberry shortened flu duration to just 2 days vs a 6 day duration in the placebo group. Elderberry shortened the duration of flu by more than half! Tamiflu only shortens the duration by 1 day. Crazy right? I use homemade elderberry syrup but you can get some premade syrup from Whole Foods or even Amazon. It’s good stuff y’all!

To make your own syrup, use this recipe. Don’t mash the berries or it will become bitter. Be gentle! Wait until the liquid has reduced to one cup. Then add your one cup of honey (you want an equal ratio). Also, go light on the ginger unless you want it a bit spicy. You can order your berries here.

2. Essential oils.

Certain oils have antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and immune supporting activity. They can also help clear congestion and ease symptoms. We personally love thieves oil along with oregano and frankincense to help support our bodies during illness. Here’s just one study talking about oils+flu. Have any essential oil questions? Message me! I’m happy to help!

3. Vitamin C, probiotics, bone broth, water.

The vast majority of our immune system is in our gut (about 80%). Nourishing our gut is so important while sick and can soothe our taxed bodies and aid in recovery. To do this, make sure to stay hydrated. Your body can not do it’s job properly unless it is hydrated. Dehydration can lead to rapid deterioration. Aim for half your body weight (in ounces).

Bone broth is loaded with collagen and minerals. Collagen is the most prevalent protein in our bodies and essential to wellness. It also can soothe irritation and inflammation. It’s also very easy to make. If you have an instant pot, add in left over bones (I save chicken bones from our whole chickens we roast). Fill with water just submerging the bones. Add in a good splash of apple cider vinegar. Add in some carrots, onions, celery and any herbs you want (I love oregano). Cook on manual for 4 hours. Strain and store in the fridge.

Along the same lines, probiotics are very important. Supporting your GI tract and replenishing good bacteria and gut health. I prefer a probiotic with a minimum of 20 billion and a variety of strains. Also, sauerkraut! I add it to my bone broth just before eating but I also eat it plain. Delicious and full of good gut bacteria! Kombucha, kimchi, miso and other fermented foods are also great additions.

Now, on to prevention!

1. Diet.

Don’t neglect fresh raw foods even though the holidays and the cold weather make us want ALL the sugar and baked goods. Sugar feeds bacteria and lowers immune function. Most baked goods are also devoid of nutrients.
Eat your greens and oranges and reds and yellows and purples! Juice if you need to. Also, consider supplementing with fish oil, probiotics, a multi, super greens, and vitamin c.
Also, stay hydrated! Your body won’t function well if it’s dehydrated.

2. Sleep.

I know, I know. But sleep deprivation and stress will wreak havoc on your immune system (and hormonal system). A bare minimum of seven hours is recommended.

3. Essential oils.

Slather up daily. Thieves, helichrysum, Frank, RC are a few of my favorites. Diffuse to purify air and keep your home healthy.

4. Washing hands and hygiene.

If you can’t wash, keep hand sanitizer or thieves spray on hand. Get it? On hand!? I love a punny joke ;).

5. Fresh air and exercise.

Exercising reduces stress, boosts endorphins, and can support overall wellness. Stress is  major player when it comes to inflammation and illness. My personal favorite? Hikes and yoga. Just make sure you are moving your body and getting outdoors a little every day.

Stay healthy friends! I am so thankful for natural and safe options!

Mix together cool water and gelatin. Then slowly add in hot water while whisking well to incorporate.
