favorite products for a natural nursery

If there’s one room in the house that we want to be toxin free it’s the nursery. Whether baby has their own room or they will be sleeping with you, making your home a safe and natural haven is easier than you think!

And doing so starts with the products you buy and use everyday.

?First up, the furniture and crib mattress. For your baby’s furniture, using sustainably made items is ideal. However, recycling old dressers and rockers  is a wonderful eco friendly option. Ask family members or shop yard sales to find items you can repurpose for your nursery. If your baby will be sleeping in a crib, they will spend the majority of their time there. Standard crib mattresses are made of plastic products and synthetic materials that off gas and contain toxic chemicals. Luckily, there are many organic and natural options to choose from such as the Naturpedic mattress.  Naturepedic uses mattress filling made from sugar cane and organic cotton and their mattresses are GOTS certified. Unlike standard mattresses, Naturpedic uses natural flame retardant measures instead of  using chemicals. They are also soy free!

?Next is the bedding. Organic bedding has become more and more mainstream and is easy to find at almost any retailer. Pottery Barn has a beautiful selection of organic cotton bedding. Aden and Anais and Burt’s Bees Baby are also favorites (and GOTS certified). I’m also a fan of wool blankets for babies. Wool is temperature regulating, antibacterial, flame resistant, and breathable.

For those that co sleep or are looking for a baby nest/lounger, Snuggle Me Organic offers an organic option. Infants love to feel safe, secure, and snuggled. Baby nests create a womb like environment that promotes better sleep. They are especially great for babies who don’t like to be swaddled but still need to feel cozy. With my youngest, we swaddled and laid him in a nest. To this day, the cozier the better in his opinion!

?Baby clothing is quite possibly the cutest thing in the world. Why should you choose organic? Because your baby wears their clothing all day and all night and the chemicals contained in their clothing are able to leech into your baby’s skin and are also breathed in. Skin is the body’s largest organ and readily absorbs the chemicals it comes in contact with. Newborns are even more sensitive to our environmental toxins due to their size and therefore I always recommend organic clothing AND safe laundry products. If you purchase organic clothing, it only makes sense to keep them non toxic by using non toxic laundry soaps and softeners. For clothing, Burt’s Bees Baby is an affordable option. Hanna Andersson and Finn and Emma are other favorites.

For laundry washing, Young Living’s Thieves detergent is a top pick for an unscented option and Attitude Living’s Sweet Lullaby detergent and softener smell incredible and is the top pick for a scented option (and the scent really does last on clothing). They are both completely non toxic, gentle, effective, and safe for the whole family. I also recommend wool dryer balls to help speed up drying time and soften clothing.

?Diapering is also important to consider and it can sometimes be complicated and confusing but it doesn’t have to be! If you are choosing to use disposable diapers, choosing an environmentally friendly option is worth looking in to. Also consider diapers that are fragrance free and less toxic than competitors. Like clothing, your baby will wear a diaper all day and night and the area exposed to their diapers are some of their most sensitive parts. Even though more natural options cost more, it’s worth the investment. In our experience, these diapers also work much, much better than other options. Favorite disposables are Bamboo Nature, Honest, and Earths Best. Keep in mind that ALL disposable diapers have a negative environmental impact.

Now, let’s chat cloth! Cloth diapers are not what your grandmother used. They are modern, adorable, incredibly easy to use (and to wash), will save you a ton of money, and are much more healthy for your baby and also the planet. To make it easy, I recommend Bum Genius diapers for day time (free times or elementals) and Grovia ONE for night. Grab about twenty day time diapers and four to six night time diapers. You’ll also need a diaper pail, pail liner , and a diaper sprayer.

?Bath products are another source of toxins. If you haven’t downloaded the think dirty app, you should. Also, the ewg/skin deep app. If you can’t grab the apps (they are free), you can view all the information on the skin deep website as well. Basically these apps show you how toxic your household products are. They break it down by chemical and also let you know why they are toxic. I highly recommend looking up the products you currently use and seeing how they rate.

As for baby products, there are three brands I support and have proven to be gentle and safe. The Young Living Seedlings line, California Baby, and Mustela (their scent free line). My boys have severe allergies and eczema and these are the only three brands out of dozens that were gentle, non toxic, and caused no rash.

?There is a hot topic in the motherhood world that is centered around breast vs bottle. While it’s no secret that I breastfeed and that I’m a supporter of breastfeeding and extended breastfeeding, I am also a fan of a healthy mommy and a healthy baby. And sometimes, formula is necessary and needed. In that scenario, know that there are healthier options!

My favorite option and highest recommendation is Mt Capra’s homemade formula. It’s a goat milk based formula which is much more gentle on stomachs and new gi systems. Cow milk is the number one allergen for babies so goat milk formula is a wonderful alternative. Goat milk also closely mimics human milk and only needs a little tweaking to make a complete human milk substitute. If I needed to use formula for any reason, this is the option I would choose.

Option two is the Weston A Price foundation’s homemade formula recipe. I am a huge fan of WAP and this recipe is nutritionally sound. It is cow milk based however so keep that in consideration.

Option three is to buy a premade powdered formula that is a healthier option over mainstream powdered formulas. The problem with mainstream formulas is that they are filled with un methylated synthetic vitamins, soy and corn. They are not organic and contain gmo ingredients. There are a few organic formulas entering the market now and hopefully that trend will continue. Holle infant formula is my recommendation.

For first foods and what to feed babies that are 6 months old and older, I highly recommend the book super nutrition for babies. It walks you through what to feed, when to feed, and why to feed the foods it recommends. It is based on Weston A Price guidelines and is scientifically based and nutrient dense.

For water, make sure the water you use is filtered. Most public water sources have high levels of pharmaceuticals as well as many heavy metals and fluoride. Berkey water filters will remove ALL the toxins from your water. They are gravity filters and do not need electricity or to be installed.

?And last but not least, clean air! It has been shown that indoor air quality is worse than outdoor air. This is due to the toxins used within the home. Discontinue smoking, candles, plug ins, perfumes, and synthetic freshening sprays which are all toxic for your baby’s lungs (and yours). Choose instead sprays made with pure essential oils and water and switch your household cleaners over to non toxic options. Thieves household cleaner is a great option and can replace all of your cleaning supplies. Thieves cleaner works in the kitchen, on the floors,  in the bathrooms, and anywhere else you need it. I even use it in my steam cleaner on the carpets. You can also purchase an air purifier for the nursery to further improve the air quality in your home.

Its important to remember (especially if you are just starting to go green) than any steps you make, make a difference. Just taking small baby steps towards living toxic free will make a huge impact on your life and the environment. So don’t get discouraged or overwhelmed. Just switch out one product at a time!

*This post is not sponsored in any way nor was I compensated to write this post. I just happen to love these products and genuinely recommend them.

a message of hope

The hospital that Beckett was born at hosts a yearly memorial service for the grieving families that delivered their baby there.

This year I was asked to speak at the service and I wanted to share my message here as well.

A message of hope.

“I loved a boy with the utmost love of which my soul is capable of, and he is taken from me – yet in the agony of my spirit in surrendering such a treasure I feel a thousand times richer than if I had never possessed it.” William Wordsworth

Two years ago our son, Beckett, was stillborn. He looked just like his big brothers and had their upturned nose. He was absolutely perfect. We were able to spend 4 precious hours with him before saying goodbye.

People often ask me how I survived losing Beckett. If it gets easier with time.

First, if you are are in the darkest parts of grief know that joy can and does return. Happiness is absolutely possible and hope gives renewed strength. I remember that the weight of my grief was suffocating after losing Beckett. I truly didn’t know if surviving the loss of a child was possible. I sought hope in others that had walked this path before me. Hope that there was life after such loss.
Today, if needed, I want to give that hope to you.

Beckett taught me how sacred life is. How fragile and beautiful life is. How close heaven is. And overtime, as the waves of grief have calmed, I can now honestly say that the honor of being Beckett’s mother and the joy of saying hello, was worth the sorrow of having to say goodbye. Loss makes life so acutely precious. Harder, yes. Heavier, definitely. But oh so very beautiful. It brings us face to face with the Lord and it makes eternity that much more glorious.

I recently read the book “safe in the arms of God” by John MacArthur. In the book he said, “A common question of grieving parents is “why did my child have to die”. However an even more potent question is “what does God desire for me to do in the midst of this tragedy?”. The question of why has no satisfactory answer. The question of “what now” can turn a person from grief to action, from loss to healing, from sorrow to joy, and from feelings of utter devastation to feelings of purpose. ”

Beckett’s first birthday was one of the hardest days of my life. Second only to his birth. This year for his second birthday I knew I had to approach it differently. I knew that I could let my grief consume me again or I could use it, harness it maybe, to create Beckett’s legacy. To do good, to make a difference, in memory of him. He’s not physically here and therefore it is a great joy that as his mother I can use the impact he made on me to impact others. To bring them hope as well. In a way, it allows me to mother him in the only way I can. It allows me to keep his memory alive. Beckett’s life has changed me forever. And I am so proud to be his mother. And now I get to live that out until we are reunited.

I believe firmly that God did not desire for our children to pass away. It was not his will or perfect plan. However I do believe that God can and will bring glory from even the darkest tragedy if we allow him and if we are willing. I have seen how God restores, heals, and has brought glory through each of my losses. Loss is painful and grief is very real. But it’s because of hope that we continue and trust that one day we all will be made whole again.

I read once that grief is merely love transformed. It’s a desperate longing for the one that is no longer with us. So of course we grieve our babies. It’s because we first loved them.

But we may also have hope. Although saying goodbye to Beckett has been the greatest tragedy of my life, to Beckett, his death was anything but a tragedy. I know where he is and who he is with. He is safe and loved and living in glory. And I know and trust that one day I will join him. So although our temporary separation is deeply painful, and although I will physically ache for him every day of my earthly life, I know what is to come.

I think that life after loss will always be a journey of grief and joy, of sorrow and happiness, of desperation and hope, of complete shattered-ness and healing. But it’s a journey with the most beautiful ending.

If I could only tell you one thing I would tell you that your precious baby is not forgotten. They are remembered, they are cherished, and they are so very loved. And although their loss is tragedy there is so much hope. Such hope.

And now, I’d love the honor to pray for you.
“Sweet savior I pray for each and every person in this room. For each person mourning their baby. I pray they know that they are seen and that your heart breaks along side theirs. Scripture says that you count every one of our tears. That you are close to the broken-hearted. But scripture also says that one day our mourning will be turned into joy. That one day, in your presence, we will be made whole. I pray that a peace that surpasses all understanding settles deeply into each heart in this room. That the promise of reunion in heaven brings hope that comforts our deepest grief. Lord be near each of our broken hearts as we wait in earnest. In Jesus name, Amen”

not so deep thoughts on motherhood

It’s 5am. Hudson and I have been up for an hour now.

He’s nursing again and I’m thinking about how much a baby changes your life. And how I would describe having a baby to someone who doesn’t have one. You know, deep thoughts while nursing.

I’m pretty sure I’d describe it as having a tiny goblin creature as a pet. Definitely more creature than human. But said creature is irresistibly adorable. More adorable than baby otters and kittens and puppies all cuddling together. So adorable that it makes your heart explode.

All you want to do is smooch and smell your creature ALL day. And strangely, their breath smells like actual heaven mist. Actual HEAVEN.

But said creature also hates sleep. And at night they somewhat morph into gremlins that have eaten after midnight. And these creatures desperately want to suck and scratch and tweedle and bite you all day and all night. And did I mention they hate sleep!? Cause they do.

And they are also LOUD. Like a wailing banshee. And they poop so much. So much. And at some point you’ll get all matters of creature fluids on you. Pee,poo, vomit, snot. Lots of it. All over you.

And these creatures are crafty and sneaky. And they will ransack your home faster than you can go pee. But you aren’t allowed to crate them or lock them in a room. So the ransacking is just a way of life. And the messier an object is, the more they want it. Your spice cabinet? Oh yes. The toilet? It’s their fave. Don’t even get me started on the pantry, your cabinets, and your dresser drawers. The one plus is that they don’t typically have a ton of teeth early on so they can’t really chew up your couch or walls. They will smear all matters of horror on both but they won’t chew it up. Small victories here.

You think bottle feeding a whole litter of kittens is hard? It’s NOTHING.
You think potty training a puppy is hard? It’s NOTHING.

These creatures, they are in a whole other dimension/level.

BUT you’ll love them insanely too much despite all the hard stuff. Insanely too much. And the first time they belly laugh, you’ll think you might actually crack open from joy. And the first time they say mama and reach for you? You melt faster than the wicked witch. You’ll even want to watch them sleep and you’ll actually miss them if they sleep too long.

And slowly, but yet also in lightning speed, they grow up. And watching them grow up…..well, that’s more words than I can write right now.

Happy Friday mamas. You are doing amazing hard and beautiful work. Enjoy your creatures today!

toddler Christmas list

It’s that time of year! Time for Santa to start working on that list!

This year I have a 12,8,6, and 1 year old. Today, I’m tackling the 1 year old’s list.

A few of his favorite things are food, water, animals, and being outside. So naturally his gifts will reflect that. Shopping for toddlers is the best! Everything is exciting and fun. I love this age ?.

First up is this Munchkin Fishin’ Bath Toy. Baths are a huge hit and this is going to be so much fun!

Next up is a water table. I can’t wait for this! I really like this one and this one.

I love Melissa and Doug puzzles. Toddlers love busy work and puzzles can keep him entertained for awhile. Plus he gets to work on problem solving and matching!

The play kitchen from IKEA is amazing. We purchased it for his first birthday and we play with it all the time. We also have a lot of the Melissa and Doug wooden food. Highly recommend! If we didn’t already have his play kitchen, we would be getting it for Christmas for sure.

I’ll be the first to admit that this play car can be quite the eye sore. But what little boy wouldn’t love this!? I may regret this after I’ve pushed him around for 6 hours straight ;).

The last toy on the list is the Melissa & Doug Wooden Barn. Simple and classic!

Santa is also bringing a new car seat! We went with the Britax Marathon ClickTight.

And last but not least, clothing and shoes! I’m trying out a new-to-me shoe company and I’m excited for him to get to wear his new shoes. These are the Ty from Plae.

That’s it for our little guy!! What’s on your toddlers Christmas list?

soothing colic naturally

I have four boys and three of them had colic. It was a lot of dark lonely nights and almost losing my sanity. Hours and hours every night of screaming and my attempts at soothing.

I’m glad to say that we all made it through alive and well, but when I was pregnant with my last baby I knew I didn’t want a colic repeat.

Unfortunately the first night we were home from the hospital (he was 3 days old) was a nightmare. He screamed from 8pm to 3am. Nothing helped. We called the pediatrician and were seen the next day.

Determined to not go through that EVER again, we armed ourselves with every possible remedy. Here are the things that worked the best for us.

1. Gripe Water

Hudson loved this brand of gripe water. We gave it to him throughout the day and night and it really helped soothe. It contains ginger and fennel which are calming to an upset stomach.

2. Gentle Baby Essential Oil

Gentle Baby is a blend of coriander, geranium, palmarosa, ylang ylang, roman chamomile, jasmine,  lemon, rose, and bergamot. I would dilute it with a carrier oil (like coconut or jojoba) and massage his stomach gently. He could be crying but within just a few minutes he would stop. This was a life saver for us!

3. Rice Sock

We had a rice sock which we would warm up and place on his stomach to help soothe.

4. Windi

We didn’t use this very often but when we needed it, it really helped!

5. Elimination Diet

Food sensitivities are very common in babies. The most common being dairy, soy, and egg. Wheat, peanut, and shellfish are also common. For us, eliminating these foods made a huge difference. Make sure you read all food labels. These ingredients are very common in processed and premade foods. Salad dressings, baked goods, sauces etc all commonly contain these ingredients.

6. Time Out

This time out is for you! Getting a few minutes to yourself is important. Take a warm bath, a walk, do some yoga. Just take some time to recoup and calm down. Frazzled mama equals a frazzled baby. Plus, you deserve some self care too!

7. Quiet Anti Stimulation Zone

Have a space in your home that has low light and adequate white noise. Swaddle your baby and take them there every evening prior to them getting hysterical. Swaddle, rock, nurse, and wind down. Also keep some bottles of water and a couple snacks for you. Make sure you have a comfortable spot to sit/rock. Make it a calming and soothing space for you and baby.

Lastly, if you are going through colic right now know this: Colic won’t last forever and you will survive it. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. In the meantime, you aren’t alone, mama. Arm yourself with an arsenal of soothing products (for you and baby) and remember this too shall pass ?.
