creating a nontoxic bedroom

I don’t know about you but I spend a lot of time in my bedroom. And as a cosleeping mama, my toddler does too. Knowing that half our life is spent in this room means that tossing out toxins and creating a relaxing and safe sleep environment is a huge priority.

If you are brand new to going “green”, I encourage you to take small baby steps. Start with laundry detergent, shampoo, body wash, lotion or makeup. Then slowly work your way from there. Don’t get overwhelmed. I promise it is easier than you think!

We have been mostly toxic free for the last two years now so I knew I needed to finally tackle our bedroom. And I’m so excited to share a few of my favorite items and tips.

First thing first is your mattress. Choosing a non toxic mattress is important because you are sleeping on your mattress every day and whatever chemicals your mattress is off gassing, you are breathing in and absorbing. Traditional mattresses are made of toxic materials and are also sprayed with them (formaldehyde and other flame retardants to name a few). Formaldehyde is now known to cause cancer and yet it is used in thousands of products. The average person is said to keep their same mattress for at least a decade. That adds up to a lot of toxic exposure.

When choosing a new mattress I went to some conventional mattress stores and tried out several options and I left feeling dizzy and with a headache. I’m very sensitive to smells and chemicals and I knew that a traditional mattress wasn’t an option for us.

I ended up purchasing a 100% latex mattress with an organic cotton and wool cover. Wool is a natural flame retardant and a great non toxic option. And while I felt good about our new mattress, it wasn’t as comfortable as I was hoping. So I knew I needed to find a topper that was both non toxic AND soft enough to provide pressure relief. Latex is extremely natural and non toxic and it can be somewhat “soft”. It’s a unique feel. Firmer than a pillow top but it doesn’t conform the way memory foam does. It does have good give but I prefer a plush feel so I knew it needed tweaking. I finally found two products that work wonderfully!

First up is a wool topper from Frankenmuth Woolen Mill. Initially, I was very nervous to try a wool mattress pad. A previous product I tried smelled so strongly that I couldn’t use it even after airing it out for a month. The barn/petting zoo smell was even noticeable in the hallway outside of my bedroom.

However, I am happy to say that I love the mattress pad from Frankenmuth Woolen Mill! It is cozy and adds just the right amount of cushion. The outside cover is organic cotton and soft. I’ve had no issues at all with odor and the quality is amazing. The company behind this product is equally impressive. If you are in need of any wool bedding, I highly recommend this company.

As for comfort, wool is soft yet supportive. My favorite thing about wool is that it is naturally antibacterial/fungal/microbial. It is also very temperature regulating so you never get too hot or too cold. If you prefer the feel of a pillow top and a more fluffy type sleep experience, a wool topper will be perfect for you!

The second topper I tried was a memory foam topper from Plush Beds. Memory foam is a beloved option due to its pressure relieving abilities. Memory foam will never be as non toxic as a latex or wool topper but I was determined to find the cleanest one available.  After all my research, Plush Beds was the only company I could find who had memory foam that was green guard gold certified. Their memory foam is made from foam sourced from plant materials instead of petroleum products. Almost all tradition memory foam is petroleum based and extremely toxic. I am so happy to have a better and safer option! Plush Beds also offers latex toppers (what they are known for) as well as mattresses. All of Plush Beds products are green guard gold certified.

As for comfort, the memory foam topper has a completely different feel from a wool topper. Where a wool topper is fluffy and cozy, a memory foam topper is conforming and pressure relieving. I personally have the 4lb memory foam and it offers wonderful pressure relief even though I only weigh 120. If you are significantly overweight I would recommend getting the 5lb foam for better support. The Plush Beds topper offers immediate response/sinkage (you don’t slowly sink deeper) which is nice. Also, it doesn’t sleep hot at all which is a concern for some. I got the cotton cover that you can add on to your topper and I recommend it.

Over all, you can’t go wrong with either of these toppers! I have loved sleeping on both of them.

Next up is bedding. Now, if there is one thing you don’t have to purchase organic, it’s your washable bedding. Although organic cotton is better for the environment, if you need to save money somewhere, your bedding is the place to do it. The toxins stored in cotton bedding will be washed out in the creation of the bedding and any residual will be washed out when you wash your bedding before use. I did purchase organic cotton sheets because they were amazing quality and were extremely soft. But I also have a set of cotton flannel sheets that are not organic (keeping it honest). For my duvet, I purchased one from Amazon that was 100% organic cotton with down filling. My duvet cover is from Ikea and is also 100% cotton.

Now let’s talk clean air. Get a good air purifier! The amount of circulating toxins in our home has a huge burden on our bodies. A high quality air purifier can remove almost all of the dust, mold, allergens, and vocs. My 7 year old has severe environmental allergies and our allergist was the one who recommended an air purifier. After having it for awhile, I am now on the hunt for a whole house system. We all love it! We went with the Rabbit Air purifier and I definitely recommend it. It’s easy to use, so quiet, minimalist, and saves you money with long lasting filters. The settings are very customizable (via a remote or the touch screen front) and it even has a setting to make it a negative ionizer. Negative ions counteract the abundance of positive ions produced by electronics. There are so many benefits to negative ions! This purifier removes all odors/pollutants and we are definitely breathing easier and sleeping better.

Lastly, if you don’t have an essential oil diffuser in your bedroom, get one!! Oils have thousands of benefits and uses and we love diffusing oils in the evening (and at nap time) that promote restful sleep. A bonus to the health benefits of oils is that you can have a great smelling home without synthetic fragrances and toxins. We normally diffuse thieves+orange during the day and gentle baby+lavender for nap. At night we are currently doing lavender+cedarwood+peace and calming for the adults and my boys diffuse sleepize+dreamcatcher. It’s our favorite part of bedtime!

Just remember that every step you take toward ditching toxins can make a huge impact on you and your family! We are the gatekeepers of our homes and we decide what toxins come in or go out. I am just so thankful that we have so many options now!

After school family fun+power ball and smoothie recipe!

This post is sponsored by Vitamix and all opinions and recipes are my own.

If there’s one thing that is guaranteed to bring us all together, it’s food. Especially after school when the boys are “starving” and needing to wind down. I’m pretty sure our family’s love language is food!

A favorite after school snack? Power balls and smoothies! Or milk shakes as the boys like to call them. The best part is that they get to help and it’s easy (and easy to clean up!).

Power Balls:

I always use a bit of what I have on hand. Today was almonds, sunflower seeds, hemp hearts (amazing source of protein), and chia seeds. I added them to the Vitamix along with some olive oil and maple syrup and blended until a slightly chunky nut butter formed. It doesn’t take long! Then I added in some oats, cashew butter, and a little coconut flour. Pulse until mixed well. Then just grab a small amount and roll into balls! Don’t hesitate to use what you have on hand (we love to add in dates instead of maple syrup but we were out). It’s really forgiving!

Strawberry “Milk Shake”:

We used a can of coconut milk, water, generous handful of spinach, frozen strawberries, frozen bananas, and a splash of maple syrup. We didn’t measure since my boys helped and just threw handfuls in :). They were a huge hit! Another bonus? These smoothies are a great source of vitamins and fat which growing bodies need.

Next, a great movie and some cuddles. I wouldn’t change a thing.

Mother’s Day Vitamix Promotion: Save up to $100 on all new machines, plus free shipping April 13th – May 20th (US Only). The E310 machine (which we have) will be $50 off for a price of $299.95 HERE.

easy aip pasta

I love pasta. My family loves pasta even more. Weekly Italian nights are a tradition in our family and probably the one meal where everyone wants seconds.

When I first went aip, I mourned Italian Food. I really did. Not only could I not have grains but I also couldn’t even have tomato based sauces. I spent many a pasta night not eating at all. But then, I snapped out of it and decided to do something about it. I’d make my own!

Now, I have two versions of sauce depending on how much time I have. These aren’t exact recipes so bare with me. I cook to taste and rarely ever measure (even when baking).

1. No-mato sauce!

Carrots or squash, celery, onion, garlic, mushrooms, salt, bone broth, beets (gives it a red color-you can’t taste them), basil, oregano, thyme. I add everything to my instant pot and cook on high for ten minutes. Then pour everything into my blender and purée.

Use whatever veggies you have on hand! Tweak it as much as you want. It’s really forgiving and very flexible.

2. Canned pumpkin, bone broth, salt, garlic powder, basil, oregano. This is my super speedy sauce recipe. Feel free to jazz it up and add more veggies to it. Mix it all up, heat in the microwave until hot and that’s it!

What about the noodles? I use zoodles or sphaghetti squash. I love both equally. Zoodles cook MUCH faster however- so for a fast meal, go with those.

For sphaghetti squash, you’ll want to cut your squash in half and place in a baking dish with a little water in the bottom of the dish. Bake at 350 until tender and soft. Scoop out seeds and discard. Then scoop out all the inside “noodles”. That’s it!

For zoodles, you’ll need to buy them already spiralized or you’ll need to do it yourself. It’s super easy and you can grab an affordable spiralizer on amazon. Zoodles can be eaten raw but I prefer to lightly steam or sauté mine just under tender. They will turn to mush if you over cook them.

To add protein, I add cooked ground chicken. That’s my go to but feel free to do shrimp or whatever protein you would want.

For the fastest pasta meal EVER, use your instant pot. Cook your ground chicken on the sauté setting. Once cooked through, add your zoodles and your sauce ingredients from the sauce #2. Cover with the lid and seal. Keep it on sauté. It will come to pressure and then immediately turn off. Release pressure and mix well. Then, eat :).

Don’t be afraid of pasta night! Experiment with different sauces and you’ll find the perfect one for you!

detox bath basics!

Baths! You love them or you hate them.

I LOVE them. And I love letting my boys take baths as well. They love bubbles and lots of toys. I prefer mine a bit more low key ;).

One thing about our bath time is the same though. And it’s the things we add to our baths to help support our body.

Our skin is our largest organ and it is covered in pores. Our skin has the ability to absorb whatever it is we put on it or keep against it. Studies have shown that products put on your skin can be found in every cell of your body within 20 minutes. That’s crazy!

When it comes to detoxing (or drawing toxins out of your body), your skin is able to purge toxins just as readily as it absorbs them. When taking a warm bath our pores expand and open up making it even more able to absorb and purge. So what are the best things to add to a bath?

1. Epsom salt. This isn’t like table salt. This is magnesium in its crystal form. Magnesium has so many benefits and current data states that 80% of the population is deficient in magnesium. Adding Epsom salts to your bath allows your body to absorb the magnesium better than taking a magnesium supplement orally. It also works at pulling toxins out of the body and it excellent for aiding in detoxification. Epsom salts are also safe for babies! I add two large handfuls of Epsom salts to my toddlers bath and two cups to my own bath. Epsom salts are inexpensive and found at most stores (and amazon!).

2. Baking soda. Baking soda helps neutralize the minerals in your water and helps soften hard water. It is also very alkaline and helps draw toxins out of the body. I add a small handful to my toddlers bath and up to a cup in my own.

3. Bentonite clay. Bentonite clay not only has its own nutrients that are able to soothe our skin, but it is also known to bond with toxins and especially with heavy metals. I add clay to our baths about once a month or when I am having a flare and need extra support. I use 1/2 cup. I order ours from amazon.

4. Essential oils. Essential oils are unique in their chemical makeups and molecules. Each oil brings it own healing and supports different functions within the body. Depending on what we are needing that day our oils vary. General wellness, soothing, and support? Lavender, Frankincense, and Gentle Baby. Immune support during illness? Thieves or RC. Achey and dealing with sore muscles? Copaiba and Peppermint can be very soothing. Stressed to the max? My favorites are Release, Surrender, and Sara. I order all of our essential oils from Young Living. If you are brand new to oils, message me and I’m happy to help you get started. Ready to grab your own oils? Go here.

5. Bubbles. Okay so bubbles may not be detoxifying but they sure are fun! It’s so important to make sure your bath products are non toxic. I use Young Living’s seedlings line for the little ones and for bubbles we use California Baby.

6. Hydrate! Make sure you are not dehydrated prior to taking a detox bath. Being hydrated will help your body flush out your toxins. Also drink a full glass of water after taking a detox bath.

Detox baths are easy and relaxing (and fun!). They are definitely a favorite way to help support our bodies and get clean. Rub a dub dub! Let’s  all detox in the tub (hey don’t blame me for my corney jokes. Blame my boys!)!

aip coconut free chicken stroganoff

I’ve been daydreaming about and craving stroganoff for months. Yes, months. I think fall just makes me want ALL the comfort food.

Well I was finally able to make a compliant coconut free version. And it definitely didn’t disappoint!

Serve over cauli rice or ribboned zucchini. Either way is amazing!

aip (coconut free) chicken stroganoff

1lb ground chicken (not lean if you have a choice)

32 oz chicken stock/bone broth

fish sauce (a couple shakes)

1 carton sliced mushrooms

1 large onion puréed

dried thyme to taste (I did two pinches)

salt to taste

garlic powder to taste (I did 1 tsp)

zucchini (spiraled or ribboned) or cauliflower rice

1/2 small cooked white sweet potato* optional

Pour chicken stock into large skillet. Add the puréed onion, mushrooms, thyme, fish sauce, and garlic powder. Simmer on medium until sauce is thick and reduced by about 2/3. Stir occasionally.

While the sauce is reducing, sauté your ground chicken in another skillet until cooked through. Remove the ground chicken from the pan and set aside. Add the ribboned zucchini/cauli rice to the pan and add some olive oil if there isn’t enough fat remaining from the chicken. Sauté until just barely soft. Set aside.

Once the sauce is ready, put it into the blender and purée well. If you want the sauce to be thicker and creamier, add in the sweet potato. Pour the sauce back into the skillet, add the ground chicken, and  season with salt to taste.

Pour over your zoodles/rice and enjoy!
